Presumptuous Sin

A teacher asked a student:  Assume you were in a jungle and a lion was about to attack you, what would you do?  Student said:  I would stop assuming!

Presumptuous Sin  Psalm 19:13

Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins;

Let them not rule over me;

Then I will be blameless,

And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in Your sight,

O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer

Sin means to “miss the mark”!   There are all kinds of sin, but one least talked about is Presumptuous Sin!  What is it?

Presumptuous - Arrogantly assuming something without knowing all the facts.

"I know Jack stole the money because he looks like a thief."

"I know Julie will go on a date with me because I'm good looking."

Assuming you know something that you really don’t and then acting on what you think you know.

Josh. 22 teaches some lessons on Presumptuous Sin and how to keep from it.   What can we learn?  First... what is the pattern of Presumptuous Sin?

What is the pattern of Presumptuous Sin?

1.  Misunderstood intentions!   v10  An "unofficial altar was built"

2.  Picking up an offense!  v16  "What is this unfaithful act that you have committed against the God of Israel?"

3.  Getting others involved in the offense!  v12  When they heard of it, the whole congregation gathered.

4.  Ready to Fight without knowing the Facts.  v12 They gathered to go up against them in war.

It could have been a terrible slaughter.   Fortunately, Israel processed this action among their brothers and fellow co-laborers and got it straightened out.   Whew!

What can we learn that will help keep us out of the power Presumptuous Sin??

AN ACRONYM TO STAY OUT OF THIS KIND OF S-I-N!!

S - SEEK the truth by going to the one who offends you.  Matt. 18

I - INTEND to reconcile!   Eph. 4:2; Gal. 6:1-2  By listening

Illust

A violinist noticed that his playing had a hypnotic effect on his audiences. They sat motionless, as though they were in a trance. He found he had the same effect on his friends' pets. Dogs and cats would sit spellbound while he played. Wondering if he could cast the same spell over wild beasts, he went to a jungle clearing in Africa, took out his violin and began to play. A lion, an elephant, and a gorilla charged into the clearing, stopped to listen, and sat mesmerized by the music. Soon the clearing was filled with every kind of ferocious animal, each one listening intently. Suddenly another lion charged out of the jungle, pounced on the violinist, and killed him instantly. The first lion, bewildered, asked, "Why did you do that?" the second lion cupped his paw behind his ear. "What?"

Eph. 4:2 ...walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace

Gal. 6:1-2  Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ

N - NEGOTIATE PEACE!   Heb. 12:14; 1Pet. 3:10-12

Heb. 12:14  Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled

1Pet. 3:10-12  For, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days,

Must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

 “ HE must turn away from evil and do good;

HE must seek peace and pursue it

And Remember... to return someones request for an explanation with kindness.

"A soft answer turns away wrath"

Presumptuous Sin... the least talked about sin of the Christian.

Also keep back Your servant from presumptuous sins;

Let them not rule over me;

Then I will be blameless,

And I shall be acquitted of great transgression.

 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in Your sight,

O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.  Psalm 19:13-14

Its not easy to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry.    But we do have one who can help with that...

Jesus Christ is the best defense attorney in the universe.   1Jn. 2:1-2

My little children, I am writing the things to you so that you may not sin.   And if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
