Bride of Christ

An Island?

And all of you, serve each other in humility, for, "God opposes the proud but favors the humble.”  1Pet. 4:5  NLT

A line in an old song says, “I touch no one and no one touches me… I am a rock… I am an island”!   To bad for that guy!  After all… we all need somebody to lean on.  The Word of God reminds us that we are NOT islands… we are all part of ONE… and humility reminds us that our part is a small one.

Thats why we don’t like that word, “humility” so much!  Pride wants a bigger part in the play!   I have to recognize and live with the fact that I have to listen to what others are saying.  I have to work with others who, I think, just don’t “get it”!

I listened as a friend shared a testimony of a conflict she was having with another person in ministry.  They were both trying to serve God… but a conflict began over who was right.   My friend could have stood on her "right to be right", but instead, humbled herself and gave the other person an opportunity to share their ideas and why they thought that way.   Her demonstration of humility softened what could have been the butting of heads.   And all butting heads will do for you... is turn you into a butt head!

Beloved, we are made in the image of God.   He opposes proud people and so do we.  He gives favor and grace to the humble and so do we.  As my friend shared her obvious humility… I just wanted to run over and give her a hug.  I want to get closer to a person who actually moves past the Christian fluffy stuff, and lives out the difficult passages of Scripture, like...   “Serve with Humility”!!

Do you suffer from the need to be right… do you want a bigger part than the one you’ve been given?   Do you tend to rewrite the script so it comes out with you in  the lead role?    Keep it up and you will soon become an island… “Alone… hiding in your room.  safe within your womb… touching no one and no one touching you”… An Island!!
