That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified… Luke 2:8-9 NLT
I love these shepherds! Their job description? To guard the sheep! Sheep were the most valuable part of daily worship in Israel. An unblemished lamb was slain morning and evening as an offering for the sins of God’s people. As it is written, “For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness”.
It was only fitting for the angels to first appear to the guardians of sheep. After all… there was another Lamb born that night… the unblemished "Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”.
Beloved… on this Christmas eve… with all the lights and laughter, fun and frolic, gifts and gluttony… don’t be afraid to take a break from the routine and, “re-Guard the Lamb”!
